Inland Towns North of New Haven

If you’re thinking about moving to this area, you’re not alone—many of my buyers have asked for quick snapshots of the key towns I work in. Below, you’ll find short descriptions and handy links to explore some of the wonderful communities north of New Haven.

INLAND TOWNS NORTH OF NEW HAVEN

Hamden (I-91 exit 10, Wilbur Cross Parkway/Route 15 exits 60, 61, 62)

Hamden, often called “The Land of the Sleeping Giant,” combines suburban convenience with abundant green space. It’s home to Sleeping Giant State Park (a two mile mountain range that many say looks like, yes, a sleeping giant), the Farmington Canal Trail, and several town parks. The community offers diverse neighborhoods and a lively mix of restaurants, shops, and cultural spots—helped by its connection to Quinnipiac University. Proximity to New Haven and major highways makes it a popular choice for commuters.

North Haven (I-91 exits 11 and 12, Wilbur Cross Parkway/Route 15 exits 62, 63, 66)

North Haven is a well-balanced suburban town with a strong business base and family-friendly neighborhoods. Recreational amenities include hiking trails, parks, athletic fields, and community events at the Town Green. It has easy access to I-91, making travel to New Haven, Hartford, or the shoreline convenient. North Haven blends residential charm with commercial convenience, offering shopping centers and local dining.

Wallingford (I-91 exits 13, 15, 16; Wilbur Cross Parkway/Route 1 exits 65, 66)

Wallingford features a classic New England downtown with restaurants, cafés, and boutiques, alongside a thriving wine scene with local vineyards. The town has numerous parks, athletic facilities, and community events. Conveniently located between New Haven and Hartford, Wallingford benefits from both highway and rail service. Its mix of historic homes, suburban developments, and open countryside appeals to a wide range of residents.

Cheshire (CT-10 and CT-68)

Cheshire is a leafy, residential town known for its attractive neighborhoods and extensive trail system. The Farmington Canal Heritage Trail runs through the community, offering walking, running, and cycling opportunities. Cheshire maintains a small-town feel with a charming town center, local shops, and community events, yet it is convenient to the metropolitan areas of New Haven and Hartford. Parks, farms, and seasonal farm stands add to its appeal.
